letters and numbers and words...oh my!

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

While we were on our camping trip, Grace and I were walking along the path to our cabin. All of the sudden, Grace stopped abruptly and exclaimed, "Mommy! Look! "Y" like Yana."
This is what she saw...
Today was our official first day of school. Grace and all of the others were so very excited (more pictures coming soon!). Here is Grace beside her 100 chart. She got to put her "1" sticker on today.
Grace also read her very first word (besides family member's names) today..."bat". She has become very concerned that her name has a "c" in it, instead of an "s". She has started to spell her name like this..."Grase". It makes perfect sense. Oh, how I love this age! It is so fun to see kids learn to read and spell and count and recognize numbers. What a privilege it is to be able to teach all of my children at home!

That is so great that Grace is recognizing letters and putting sounds together. Grace as "Grase" just shows how much she is thinking about how language works! Hope you have a great school year with little Miss Smarty Pants (and her clever siblings)! :)

Good job Grace! How exciting to start school!

Sarah, she looks so old in that picture. Wow, how far she's come . . . smart little one. I like the "Y" spotting.

Teddi's teacher was talking about "F" last week and Teddi said, "Frankie!" (as in her new brother-in-law!) The great part was, her teacher understood her. . . we're getting there!

Hope you have a great school year!

Blessings~

I was thinking the other day about how well my kids accept the explanation, "Oh, that's just a funny word" to explain, say, the spelling of the number "two." At this age, I wouldn't accept it nearly as well as my girls do, and then I started wondering if there were kids who really do get hung up on the senselessness of some English spellings. Guess Grace does. It will be fun to see how that quality manifests in her life in the future. Probably she will be very conscientious about truth, wrong, right, etc.

Grace is such a cutie!! What an exciting time to be there with her in what she is learning and have her share her thoughts with you!!! Can't wait to read more about your "first day of school". How exciting!! Loved the post about the family camp also...what a special family adventure!!

We have started home school this week too! It has gone okay so far. Claire wants to do school too so I may have to find some activities for her to do while the big kids do school. Claire recognizes her name by the letter C so every word that starts with C must be her name, she is sure of it!

Hugs,
Robin
