Redemption (part 1)

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

You may choose to look the other way but you can never again say that you did not know.
William Wilberforce

A couple of nights ago, David and I watched Born into Brothels, which is a documentary about children who are growing up in the red light district in Ind*a.

Friends,
these are children.
Children
who are regularly harmed,
regularly abused,
regularly oppressed.

Children.

We are born helpless and vulnerable. This should be a beautiful time of being loved and cared for, learning to trust and learning to lean. This is what God intended. Instead our world is full of ignored, starving, beaten, trafficked children who are learning nothing of true relationship and nothing of true love.
The Strength of the King, p 85

Dear ones, helping vulnerable children heal isn't always easy. Sometimes it is downright hard. But friends, there is no difficulty that I have faced that even comes close to comparing to the plight of these children.

Yes, some of my adopted children have had tantrums.
Yes, some of them have struggled to learn to trust.
Yes, it's tiring at moments (and sometimes it's even tiring for days or weeks at a time!).

But I have three daughters (and an amazing son) whose lives are being redeemed.
They are beautiful and loved.
They are trusting and learning to trust.
They are growing in true relationships and true love.

But the little girls who grow up in brothels...?

Oh, dear Jesus.

There were a few times in the past two months when I thought that perhaps it was better that R.'s adoption wasn't moving as quickly as we'd hoped. Maybe we'd have more of the money if we had more time.

But, I am not thinking that way any longer!

R. is in a good place...so much better than many of the children's homes. There is no danger of her ending up in the red light district. She is loved and cared for, and I will forever be grateful for this.

But, watching Born into Brothels reminded me that every single child needs the love of parents who will truly be that child's protector. Every single child needs to know that they are cherished. Every single child needs to have the special love of a family. Every single child needs redemption.

How is it that parents have become the oppressors?! This is in complete contradiction to the way that the Father made this world. Our loving Father who would never oppress, but always redeems. May our parenting always reflect the love of our precious, Redeeming Father!

So true....so beautifully written.

I can't stop thinking about that movie either....it haunts me..

And you are so right in what you said last night...we wouldn't want our children to live one hour there...not one hour.

That is a painfully beautiful film. I like the thoughts you've shared here . . . no child should have to live those kinds of realities. God help us to keep these children at the forefront of our minds and prayers and actions.

Amen. Even though I have very limited first hand knowledge of much of the oppression and abuse, my small understanding means that I can never again say that I did not know. The adoption process and our trip to China changed us in many ways. And I think of this often. This post really hit home. Thank you.

I asked my friend a while back who is a missionary in In*dia if it true how they treat women there....she said "yes". It is a hard, hard place :( Thankful for her family....others like hers...and families like yours who are working to help in this place, whether it be on a large scale or just one little one at a time. Continued prayers for R and the other children there.
